Why Mealybugs Are Harder Than They Look

Mealybugs produce a waxy white coating that protects them from direct contact. A spray alone can't reliably penetrate thick waxy clusters or egg sacs — the liquid beads off before it reaches the pest. This is why the first step is always physical, direct-contact treatment, before you spray anything.

Identification

White cottony or waxy fluff in leaf axils, at stem joints, and along stems. Sticky honeydew below infested areas, often with sooty black mold. If your plant is declining despite good care and you notice white residue at the drainage holes, check the roots — root mealybugs look identical but live underground.

The Two-Step Treatment

Step 1 — Spot treat with isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab. Press the swab directly onto each mealybug cluster. The alcohol penetrates the wax and kills on contact. Don't spray first — the swab is what breaks through the coating. Physical pressure matters here.

Step 2 — Full-plant spray. After spot treating, spray the entire plant with 70% isopropyl alcohol. This catches crawlers (the young, mobile stage before they develop a waxy coating) that you can't see individually. Crawlers are the primary spread mechanism and the most vulnerable life stage.

Repeat every 5–7 days for 8–10 weeks.

Why It Takes 8–10 Weeks

Mealybug egg sacs can contain hundreds of eggs and release crawlers in waves over several weeks. Each wave of new crawlers needs to be caught before they settle and develop their waxy protection. Stopping early — even when visible clusters are gone — allows survivors to rebuild.

Root Mealybugs: The Hidden Colony

If foliar treatment isn't working after 3–4 weeks, unpot the plant. Root mealybugs are a separate species that live entirely underground and won't respond to leaf sprays. See the root mealybug post for the full protocol.
