Aphids on Houseplants: Why They Keep Coming Back
The Biology Behind the Boom
Aphids have a biological trick that makes them uniquely explosive: parthenogenesis. Female aphids can reproduce without mating, giving birth to live young (not eggs) that are already pregnant. A single aphid can produce 80+ offspring per week under warm conditions, and those offspring are reproductive within 7–10 days. A population can go from a few insects to thousands in under two weeks.
This is why aphid infestations seem to appear from nowhere — and why treating once never finishes the job.
Identification
Aphids are small (1–3mm) and pear-shaped, but they come in green, black, white, pink, and woolly brown varieties — all treated the same way. Look for them clustered on new growth, stem tips, and flower buds. Secondary signs include sticky honeydew residue on leaves below the infestation, and ants patrolling the stems (ants actively farm aphids for their honeydew and will protect them from predators).
What Works
Step 1: Manual removal first. A strong blast of water dislodges a significant portion of the population before you spray. Do this outdoors or over a sink — it's more effective than most people expect.
Step 2: 70% isopropyl alcohol spray. Full coverage of stems, undersides, and growing tips. Alcohol kills aphids on contact by dissolving their cuticle. It evaporates cleanly and doesn't build up in the soil.
Step 3: Repeat every 3–5 days. Given the 7–10 day reproductive cycle, a 3–5 day treatment window ensures each new generation is hit before it can reproduce.
Treatment Timeline
Spray every 3–5 days for 3–4 weeks. Check for ants as a monitoring tool — when ant activity on the plant drops to zero, aphid populations have collapsed.
What People Miss
Folded and curled leaves. Aphids shelter inside curled or cupped leaves — spray won't reach them through the fold. Open the leaf and spray directly. New growth that stays distorted even after treatment was likely damaged before treatment began and won't recover, but clean new growth after treatment starts is the real indicator of progress.
Ants protecting the colony. If ants are present, they're actively defending aphids from predators and other treatment efforts. Address the aphids directly — once they're gone, the ants leave too.
